Colocation is a hosting arrangement where you own the physical server hardware but house it in a third-party data center. The facility provides power, cooling, physical security, and network connectivity while you maintain full control over the server.
How Does Colocation Work?
In a colocation setup, businesses purchase and configure their own servers, then rent rack space in a data center. The data center provides the infrastructure — redundant power supplies, backup generators, climate control, fire suppression, and high-speed internet connections — that would be prohibitively expensive to replicate in an office.
Colocation is typically chosen by organizations that need full hardware control but want enterprise-grade infrastructure. It offers better performance and security than on-premises hosting while giving more control than cloud hosting. However, it requires significant upfront investment in hardware and technical expertise to manage the servers.
