Uptime is the percentage of time a server or website is operational and accessible to users. It is a critical metric for hosting reliability, typically expressed as a percentage like 99.9% (allowing about 8.76 hours of downtime per year).
How Does Uptime Work?
Uptime is calculated by dividing the total operational time by the total time in a period. A 99.9% uptime guarantee (often called "three nines") allows approximately 8.76 hours of downtime per year, while 99.99% ("four nines") allows only about 52 minutes. Most quality hosting providers offer at least 99.9% uptime SLAs.
Downtime can be caused by hardware failures, software bugs, DDoS attacks, maintenance windows, or network issues. Hosting providers use redundant hardware, load balancers, and multiple data centers to maximize uptime. When evaluating hosting, look for uptime guarantees backed by Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that offer credits if uptime falls below the promised level.
