What is Web Traffic?

Web traffic refers to the volume of data transferred between a server and its visitors, as well as the number of users visiting a website. In hosting contexts, traffic is measured in terms of bandwidth consumption (data transfer) and visitor metrics like page views and unique sessions.

How Does Traffic Work?

Traffic volume directly impacts hosting resource requirements. Each visitor request consumes bandwidth as the server transmits HTML pages, images, scripts, and other assets. A page that is 2 MB in size served to 10,000 daily visitors generates approximately 20 GB of data transfer per day. High-traffic websites need hosting plans with sufficient bandwidth allocations and enough CPU and RAM to handle concurrent connections.

Traffic patterns are rarely constant, and hosting infrastructure must accommodate spikes caused by marketing campaigns, viral content, seasonal events, or sudden media coverage. Scalable hosting solutions like cloud hosting and CDNs can absorb traffic surges dynamically, while fixed-capacity plans on shared or VPS hosting may struggle under unexpected load. Monitoring traffic patterns helps you anticipate growth and scale your hosting resources proactively.
