What is a Parked Domain?

A parked domain is a registered domain name that is not currently associated with an active website or email service. It typically displays a placeholder page, the registrar's default landing page, or redirects to another domain, and is held for future use, brand protection, or resale purposes.

How Does Parked Domain Work?

Domain parking serves several strategic purposes. Businesses often park domains to protect their brand by registering common misspellings, alternative TLDs, or variations of their primary domain name. Domain investors park domains they intend to resell, sometimes displaying pay-per-click advertising on the placeholder page to generate passive revenue. Companies may also park domains they plan to use for future projects, preventing competitors from acquiring them.

In a hosting context, a parked domain (sometimes called an alias domain) can also refer to an additional domain name that points to the same website as your primary domain. For example, if your main site is at example.com, you might park example.net and example.org so they display the same content or redirect to the primary domain. Most hosting control panels like cPanel provide simple interfaces for managing parked domains alongside your primary hosting account.
