How Does Package Manager Work?
Package managers solve the complex problem of dependency management by maintaining a registry of available packages, resolving dependency trees (including transitive dependencies), and ensuring compatible versions are installed. A manifest file (package.json for npm/yarn) declares project dependencies, and a lockfile (package-lock.json or yarn.lock) records the exact versions installed to ensure reproducible builds across different environments and team members.
In web hosting and deployment, package managers play a critical role in build pipelines. When deploying a web application, the hosting platform runs the package manager to install dependencies before building the project. The choice of package manager affects installation speed, disk usage, and security. npm is the default for Node.js, yarn offers faster installations with parallel downloads, and pnpm uses a content-addressable store to save disk space.
