What is Log Rotation?

Log rotation is an automated system administration process that manages log files by periodically archiving, compressing, and eventually deleting old log data to prevent them from consuming excessive disk space. It ensures that servers maintain useful recent logs without running out of storage.

How Does Logs Rotation Work?

Log rotation is typically handled by utilities like logrotate on Linux systems, which can be configured to rotate logs based on file size, age, or a combination of both. A typical rotation policy might keep seven days of daily logs, compress logs older than one day, and delete logs older than 30 days. The configuration can be customized per application, so critical services might retain logs longer than less important ones.

Without proper log rotation, active web servers can generate gigabytes of log data in a short period, eventually filling the disk and causing service outages. In a hosting environment, log rotation is especially important for shared hosting where disk space is limited, and for high-traffic sites that generate massive access logs. Most hosting control panels configure basic log rotation automatically, but administrators of VPS and dedicated servers should verify and customize rotation policies for all services.
