What is Gzip Compression?

Gzip compression is a method of compressing files on a web server before sending them to the browser, significantly reducing the amount of data transferred over the network. Browsers automatically decompress gzip-compressed files, making the process transparent to users.

How Does Gzip Compression Work?

Gzip works by finding repeated strings within a file and replacing them with shorter references, which is particularly effective for text-based files like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSON. Typical compression ratios for web files range from 60% to 80%, meaning a 100KB file might be reduced to 20-40KB during transfer. This directly reduces bandwidth usage and improves page load times.

Most modern web servers support gzip compression and can be configured to automatically compress responses. Nginx and Apache both have built-in gzip modules that can be enabled with a few configuration directives. The newer Brotli compression algorithm offers even better compression ratios than gzip and is supported by all modern browsers, though gzip remains the universal fallback for maximum compatibility.
