What is Domain Registration?

Domain registration is the process of reserving a unique domain name on the internet for a specified period, typically one to ten years, through an accredited domain registrar.

How Does Domain Registration Work?

Registering a domain name gives you the exclusive right to use that name for your website and email addresses for the duration of the registration period. The process involves searching for an available domain, providing your contact information as the registrant, selecting a registration term, and completing payment. Once registered, the domain is added to the global DNS database and can be pointed to your hosting server.

Domain registrations must be renewed before they expire to avoid losing ownership. Most registrars offer auto-renewal to prevent accidental expiration. If a domain expires and is not renewed within a grace period, it may enter a redemption phase with additional recovery fees, and eventually become available for anyone to register. Protecting valuable domain names with timely renewals is essential for maintaining your online presence.
